With some comments from someone old enough to remember these cars!

 
Harley Earl with the 1938 Buick concept car.  Harley Earl was the chief stylist at GM for years. He introduced "port holes" on Buicks, tail fins, and lots of chrome.
1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt concept car. WW2 got in the way of any further development of this car.
1951 Buick LeSabre- Fins and chrome leading the way to the "boats of the 50's".
1951 Hudson Hornet- You stepped down when you crossed the outer frame.
1951 Studebaker Champion- People  joked that you didn't know if it was coming or going.
1953 Buick Wildcat- Some of these were sold to "normal" folks.
1954 Buick Wildcat II- Note the resemblance to the first Corvette's- and the port holes!
1954 Dodge FireArrow-
1955 Nash Rambler Cross Country Wagon- The seats folded down into a bed. A mobile motel room.
1956 Ford Sunliner- The speedometer was illuminated by sunlight from the back, through the dashboard.
1958 Edsel Convertible- An Oldsmobile sucking a lemon was an apt description
1958 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser- A co-worker bought one of these. We never stopped laughing.
1959 Chevrolet Brookwood Stationwagon- Sideways tail fins. The last of the chromewagons.
1959 Plymouth Fury- Chryslers answer to tail fins. They had the shift lever on the dashboard.
1971 Buick Rivera Boattail- After winning design awards for the 1963, 1964, 1966, and 1967 models, Buick came up with this. Coupled with  strangulaton emission controls, they re-invented the "dog".
1951 Chrysler K310 -Chrysler's version of "the dog".
